About Me
My name is John Shields, and I started Shields Financial Services in December 2021 after working for almost a decade in public accounting at a mid-sized, Triad NC based CPA firm.
I may look young, but I am a veteran CPA who refuses to back down from challenges. My 12-year competitive swimming career with an Olympic caliber team taught me the benefits of hard work and dedication. I gained a robust education from Davidson College and Wake Forest University. I have been married to my amazing wife for over ten years and am a proud father of four young children. When I'm not working, you can bet I’m either helping care for our infant daughter or wrestling with her big brothers. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
During my tenure as an external auditor, I performed a wide variety of assurance, tax, and consulting projects both as an experienced staff and as a project manager. The structure and culture of my former CPA firm allowed me to cultivate client relationships and become their trusted advisor, not the infamous auditor. It was through this process that my passion for client service and building professional relationships was born.

I started SFS after consistently hearing from friends, business contacts, and even my own clients how desperately they needed a reliable accountant to provide basic corporate accounting services, or at least return their phone calls. Too often, the average accountant focuses on immediate tasks while losing sight of the big picture, and basic customer service. SFS exists to provide: comprehensive and reliable accounting services that exceed expectations, peace of mind through lasting results and superior customer service, and ultimately, to fix what is broken in the accounting profession.
